Yesterday we ate the first blackberries of the season, mostly harvested by the overgrown bank below the stalled building site at the corner of West Hill and Station Approach, supplemented by a few from the entrance to, inter alia, Epsom Autos - people who have been attending to our cars for many years. Pretty good they were too. Sadly, I think that the brambles there have been hacked back a bit since last year, so there are not going to be very many.
I got the impression that these early berries were in the lead on their clusters. That is to say, just the one ripe berry to the cluster. First off the blocks in some botanical sense or other.
Inspection of the archive - with the help of right click on reference 1 to take me to 'View page source' - tells me that the first blackberries last year were picked somewhere in the back of Ryde on the 16th of July. Just about a month later than this year.
Last year we did not pick any blackberries in the proper way, with the result that we are now taking our stewed apples with cloves, rather than with frozen blackberries. We shall see what happens this year: far too expensive in the shops to actually buy them.
